Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gilead, the Vice President CoS, Corporate Strategy and Projects in the CEO Office is a leadership role primarily responsible for supporting CEO as Chief of Staff, driving development, communication, and implementation of the corporate strategy and leading cross-functional projects. This individual serves as a trusted advisor to the CEO and the Gilead Executive Leadership Team (GLT), ensuring alignment and pull-through of the corporate strategy across functions. In addition, this individual leads a team that is accountable for supporting and/or coordinating across a diverse set of strategic projects as well as the planning and execution of key strategic meetings such as Board of Directors meetings, GLT meetings, Senior Strategy Group (SSG) meetings, and more. This individual must be able to translate and synthesize complex internal and external dynamics into clear and accessible content to drive generative discussions and aid strategic decision-making for senior-level meetings across the company. The role requires exceptional strategic thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to manage high-impact initiatives with precision and clarity.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

  • Lead the development, refinement, communication, and implementation of Gilead’s corporate strategy under direction from the CEO and in collaboration with the GLT and other senior leaders; this includes:

    • Tracking progress and leading senior leader discussions

    • Communicating progress to audiences at all levels of the company

    • Ensuring implementation of select initiatives as part of select corporate strategic priorities (e.g. Decisions@Gilead, Gilead intranet project, etc.)

    • Conducting benchmarking and mapping industry trends

    • Developing white papers on topics of key strategic interest to the long-term strategy of the company

    • Collaborating and coordinating with other strategic planning processes (such as LRP, Portfolio Review, annual Budget and corporate KPI setting)

    • Serve as a thought partner and advisor to senior leaders and team members, fostering a culture of strategic clarity and responsiveness.

  • Lead and/or support a select, yet diverse, set of strategic projects owned by the CEO Office; this includes:

    • Cross-functional teams such as IRA or US Trade War coordination teams

    • Ad hoc strategy projects including Enterprise China Strategy, org and operating model strategy projects

    • Provide consulting support or resources to the business such as the Lenacapavir for PrEP Launch team and market expansion strategy, iHUB strategy projects in GPS

    • Enterprise China Strategy and Enterprise Data Science group

  • Synthesize content, plan agendas, and facilitate senior leader meetings and other high-stakes forums; this includes:

    • Quarterly Board of Directors meetings (agenda creation, coordination of content prep, and meeting participation)

    • Quarterly Science Committee meetings (agenda creation, coordination of content prep, taking minutes)

    • Bi-weekly GLT meetings (fully driving agenda creation, coordination of content prep, taking minutes, and assigning action items)

    • Annual Senior Strategy group meetings (agenda creation, coordination of content prep as well as synthesis of key strategy materials)

    • Quarterly Operating Group (OG) meetings (agenda creation and preparing GLT for participation)

  • Supporting strategic CEO communications and messaging; this includes:

    • Content development to educate CEO for select engagements

    • Planning and execution of HBS visits and HBS case study development

    • Ad hoc support for any internal or external comms and engagements

  • Manage a team of resources (corporate strategy and projects team) that supports the key responsibilities of the CEO Office described above; this includes:

    • Mentorship and development of team members, promoting strategic thinking and professional growth

    • Leading by example, demonstrating Gilead’s core values and leadership commitments

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Understands Gilead’s portfolio and strategic evolution.

  • Knowledgeable about biopharma dynamics and competitive landscape.

  • Experience / understanding of corporate, functional, and product-level strategy.

  • Proactively drives strategy with a balance of visionary thinking and practical execution.

  • Agile multitasker with a bias for action and who prioritizes fast, adapting to shifting demands and capable of meeting dynamic deadlines

  • Quick learner - applies 80/20 rule; drives forward in face of ambiguity

  • Synthesizes complex ideas into clear, structured strategic insights.

  • Confidence to provide dissenting views when appropriate

  • Highly adept at influencing upward and downward in organization without direct reporting relationship

  • Maintains high ethical standards, integrity, and maturity to work with senior level leaders and comport themselves appropriately while being viewed as a colleague

  • Communicates crisply in writing and speech; expert in executive-ready PowerPoint.

Education / Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. in science, business, or other fields required

  • M.S., Ph.D. in Life Sciences, M.D., or M.B.A. preferred

  • 12+ years of experience (8+ post graduate degree) in biotech industry, preference for experience in corporate strategy, commercial strategy, product strategy, finance, or consulting

  • 3+ years at top tier consulting firm a plus
