As a Senior Director, Global Category Strategy & Sourcing Excellence, at Gilead you will lead the transformation and elevation of enterprise-wide procurement capabilities, driving strategy, governance, and operational excellence across global sourcing.

This is a site-based role in Foster City, CA at our global headquarters.

Role Overview

This role exists to define and scale a best-in-class category strategy and sourcing operating model. You will shape enterprise standards, influence senior stakeholders, and ensure delivery of measurable business value through disciplined strategy execution and sourcing excellence.

You will operate at the center of Procurement, partnering with Legal, Finance, Risk, and business leaders to deliver an integrated, insight-driven sourcing ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Category Strategy & Governance

  • Design and implement a standardized category strategy framework, including playbooks, templates, governance, and approval pathways

  • Own the global category strategy roadmap (annual and 3-year horizon), ensuring alignment with enterprise priorities

  • Establish consistent strategy development, segmentation, and execution monitoring processes

  • Lead structured review cycles with senior leaders to ensure quality, alignment, and executive readiness

Sourcing Excellence & Transformation

  • Define and continuously improve enterprise sourcing frameworks, including RFx standards, evaluation models, and complexity assessments

  • Drive adoption of standardized sourcing practices across categories and regions

  • Ensure sourcing events are executed in alignment with defined governance and operating models

  • Integrate category strategy with sourcing operations to enable scalable execution

MSP Management & Operational Performance

  • Serve as the single point of accountability for third-party sourcing provider (MSP) performance

  • Establish and manage KPIs, SLAs, scorecards, and quality assurance processes

  • Lead business and operational reviews, addressing performance, risks, and continuous improvement opportunities

  • Ensure alignment of MSP capacity with demand, complexity, and enterprise compliance requirements

Capability Building & Enablement

  • Develop and deliver capability uplift programs for category managers and sourcing teams

  • Maintain enterprise resource libraries, including tools, templates, benchmarks, and market intelligence

  • Drive adoption of new processes, tools, and best practices

Cross-Functional Leadership & Change Management

  • Partner with Legal, Finance, Risk, and Compliance to ensure sourcing activities meet enterprise standards

  • Lead change management initiatives required to support procurement transformation

  • Influence stakeholders across a matrixed organization to adopt new ways of working

Outcomes & Impact

  • Elevate enterprise category strategy and sourcing maturity

  • Deliver measurable ROI and predictable service delivery

  • Enable scalable, insight-driven decision-making across procurement

  • Strengthen governance, compliance, and operational consistency globally

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 14 years of relevant professional experience
    OR

  • Master’s Degree (or MBA) and a minimum of 12 years of relevant professional experience
    OR

  • PhD and a minimum of 12 years of relevant professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience leading global procurement, category management, or sourcing functions

  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing senior leaders and high-performing teams

  • Proven track record delivering large-scale procurement or operating model transformation

  • Deep expertise in sourcing strategy, supplier management, and procurement analytics

  • Experience working in complex, matrixed global organizations with cross-functional influence

  • Strong business partnering and stakeholder management skills, with ability to influence without authority

  • Experience managing external providers (e.g., MSPs) with accountability for performance and outcomes

  • Knowledge of procurement systems, data, and analytics to drive decision-making
