Protein Therapeutics in Gilead Research has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Associate to join the Protein Sciences team. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated scientist with hands-on knowledge in recombinant antibody purification and protein analytics. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to produce and interpret experimental data with scientific rigor and independence. With guidance from the manager, the individual will work effectively with cross-functional project teams to generate and validate therapeutic proteins and tool molecules, including monoclonal and bispecific antibodies, immunocytokines, and other complex biologics. The ideal candidate is hard-working, team-oriented, professional, diligent, and motivated to expand his/her technical and scientific skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform protein purification and characterization for quality and document work in electronic lab notebook and various informatics systems to support the preclinical development of biopharmaceutical programs across multiple therapeutic areas.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and check in protein samples into the sample bank.
  • Use good oral and written communication skills to relay scientific data and update collaborators of purification status and challenges.
  • Actively participate in group meetings, present results, interpret data, draw conclusions and propose next steps for the presented work.
  • Maintain awareness of cutting-edge technical developments and scientific knowledge and apply these where possible to improve work quality and efficiency.

Basic Qualifications:

2+ Years with BS
OR
0+ Years with MS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in protein sciences and protein biochemistry
  • At least 2 years of direct experience in purifying and characterizing a variety of recombinant proteins, particularly monoclonal antibodies and complex biologics (e.g., bi/multi-specific antibodies)
  • Hands-on experience in purification techniques including affinity, ion exchange, size exclusion, hydrophobic interaction chromatography using AKTA Avant/Pure
  • Proficiency with various analytical protein characterization techniques such as SEC-HPLC or UHPLC, SDS-PAGE or CE-SDS, Endosafe
  • Ability to perform method development and write protocols
  • Strong work ethic and detailed record-keeping are required
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Familiarity with other protein characterization technologies (DLS, SEC-MALS, LC/MS, IEX/HIC-HPLC)
  • Operating experience with various automation instruments e.g., autosamplers, automated liquid handling systems
  • Training and experience in automation system programing or scripting
  • BS in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field with at least 2+ years of relevant experience (3+ years preferred) or MS with above listed characteristics and techniques for the position


The salary range for this position is: $94,945.00 - $122,870.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
