Associate Scientist - Viral Vector Downstream Process Design

Kite Viral Vector Downstream Process Development is seeking for highly motivated Sr. Associate Scientist to join our team in Santa Monica.  The Sr. Associate Scientist will provide technical leadership for viral vector downstream process development and characterization to support clinical and commercial manufacturing. As the Sr. Associate Scientist, the individual will work and collaborate with Upstream, Analytical, Formulation, Drug Product and MSAT teams to support ongoing pipeline products.  The responsibilities also include authoring technical reports, process transfer documents, process control strategy and process related documents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategize, design and execute downstream process development studies to support viral vector clinical and commercial manufacturing process
  • Perform normal flow and tangential flow filtration operations, chromatographic separations, in-process analytical testing as required
  • Perform process analysis and trend process performance.  Provide frequent updates to leadership
  • Author and review technical reports, process descriptions, process control strategy and process related documents
  • Support technology transfer of clinical and/or commercial process
  • Collaborate with Upstream, Analytical, Formulation, Drug Product and MSAT team to support ongoing pipeline products
  • Participate and influence the cross functional team to advance CMC activities
  • Manage matrix team or direct reports.  Mentor junior staff
  • Maintain familiarity with scientific literature and applies appropriately to research projects. Perform normal flow and tangential flow filtration operations, chromatographic separations, in-process analytical testing as required

Basic qualifications: 

  • BS degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline with 5+ years of experience or
  • MS degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline with 3+ years or
  • PhD degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline with 0+ years

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of viral vector downstream separation techniques and principles such as different modes of chromatography, harvest and filtration
  • Experience in downstream unit operations such as harvest, chromatography, TFF and depth/absolute filtration 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of process design, optimization and characterization for early to late-stage programs
  • Experience in DOE approach and statistical analysis using JMP SAS or equivalent
  • Ability to think critically and demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, strong sense of responsibility, and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and advancing a culture of safety within work and laboratory settings
  • Ability to work and collaborate in cross functional teams, research, development, manufacturing in a fast pace, dynamic team setting
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal, written communication skills and interpersonal skills
