We are seeking a highly motivated leader to join Kite’s Corporate Development team to be the Director of Alliance Management. The Alliance Management group is responsible for managing and optimizing the value of Kite’s alliances for pharmaceuticals at all stages of the product life cycle (research, development, and commercial). Alliances include collaborations, joint ventures, and in- and out-licensing of products and technologies. This opportunity will report into the Head of the Alliance Management group and while our preference is for this position to be based out of our Santa Monica, CA Headquarters, this opportunity can be a remotely based position in the contiguous United States for the right candidate.
Responsibilities of the Director of Alliance Management Include:
Cross-company activities:
Manages all stages of strategic partnerships and licenses for cell therapy programs and products
Manages the governance of strategic partnerships across Research, Development, Commercial and Operations, including establishing governance structures and managing the partner relationships and governance committees, as well as identifying key issues and driving towards their resolutions
Works with each partner company to set the direction and operationalization of the alliance to optimally manage the partnership and implement the partnership agreement in a manner that maximizes its value across the partnership
Regularly communicates with partner alliance management counterpart and other key partner stakeholders as needed, including ad hoc communications/events that require cross-functional communication
Issue management – foresees and addresses key issues that may require immediate senior leadership attention while working diligently manage issues and to get ahead of issues in a timely manner
Performs alliance “health checks” and regularly report on alliance status
Regularly reports on or develop and forecasts as appropriate to support financial planning activities
Intra-company collaboration:
Monitors implementation of and adherence to agreed-upon Research, Development and Commercialization plans; take appropriate action to ensure execution of them
Compliance/contract management – liaises with Legal, Finance, R&D, Commercial and other functions as well as project teams to ensure that key contract milestones, financial transactions, progress reports, etc. are handled appropriately and provide information/updates or reporting, as needed
Conducts regular reviews/meetings with senior management and other functions as appropriate to communicate key issues, milestones, etc. and gather feedback
Leads and/or participates in contract renegotiations, as appropriate
Participates in review of new partner contract negotiations as appropriate and provide input into partnership agreement terms; in particular governance structures and processes
Builds expertise about partner companies, including company organization/leadership, strategies, financials, priorities, etc.
Regularly reports and presents on alliance overviews, activities, and status to senior leadership, teams, and key stakeholders
Participates in alliance management group meetings to review progress and issues and share best practices
Basic Qualifications:
PhD degree with 8+ years of Alliance and/or Business Development and/or Strategy and/or Operations experience
OR
MA / MD degree with 10+ years of Alliance and/or Business Development and/or Strategy and/or Operations experience
OR
BS / BA degree with 12+ years of Alliance and/or Business Development and/or Strategy and/or Operations experience
OR
High School Degree with 16+ years of Alliance and/or Business Development and/or Strategy and/or Operations experience
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD, MBA or other advanced degree in Life Sciences, Business, Medicine or Law
10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical, life sciences or related industry, preferably in commercial, business development, or project leader/project management role
5+ years of experience in Alliance Management, Business Development or related function
Knowledge and experience in oncology, immunology, cell therapy, and /or gene-editing technologies preferred
Experience in global markets (e.g., EU, China, Japan, and other)
Fluency or proficiency in at least one other language
Previous experience working with both industry and academic collaborators is a strong plus
Strong understanding of the drug development, approval, and commercialization process
Knowledge of early and late-stage transactions and at least a high-level understanding of the science and technologies involved
Leadership and a strong sense of self-direction
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to lead, interact with, focus, negotiate, resolve conflict
Strong quantitative and analytical skills
Demonstrated ability to identify, prioritize and resolve key project and partnership issues
Demonstrated ability to interact with and to present to senior leadership and executives
Demonstrated attention to detail and excellence in project management and effectively managing multiple projects/priorities
Demonstrated ability to work with and to coordinate demands from multiple stakeholders, both internally and with external partners.
Experience in leading cross functional teams within a highly matrixed organization, including ability influence and drive results across functions and levels
Ability to structure and to steer complex processes and to align with multiple stakeholders at all levels of the organization - must be able to handle ambiguity well
Ability to independently manage multiple projects under tight deadlines in a dynamic environment
Excellent communication skills with an ability to efficiently and productively communicate both orally and in writing (proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
