An opportunity is available in the EH&S team at Gilead in La Verne, California. The successful candidate will be joining a highly motivated and cross functional team to help develop and elevate a proactive EH&S culture across our La Verne campus via administration of compliance related to our Sustainability and Injury and Illness prevention programs. You will use effective time management skills to work with limited supervision on routine projects to moderate complexity, including updating existing programs, protocols, and procedures. The Specialist will possess excellent communication and customer service skills and will be expected to maintain regular interaction with customer groups.
Key Responsibilities:
Identify, document and reduce potential workplace hazards, including accident investigation, through corrective actions and making recommendations to management.
Support the site Sustainability program and plans.
Conduct audits, inspections, and training.
Provide program specific and general EH&S training, including New Hire Orientation for employees and safety training for contractors.
Serve on the after-hours support roster and Emergency Response Team requiring periodic 24 hour on-call availability
Assist with implementing general elements of the La Verne EH&S Program, as defined by local, state and federal agencies.
Conduct regular job safety walks and safety audits of workplace
Review and approve, as required, work permits for non-routine high-risk activities
Review site safety plans for construction activities
Act, as needed, as the site EH&S contact for inspections by regulatory agencies
Gather data for the purposes of regulatory reporting and for monitoring, measuring, and communicating environmental performance; prepares report submissions
Maintains records relating to environmental management system initiatives and projects, records of regulatory filings and correspondence
Utilizes established systems and practices to determine and develop approaches to routine problems of moderate complexity, based on analysis of situation or data
Monitors and measures performance in relation to contractual obligations and project deadlines
Monitor incident data in incident reporting platform and follow up on Action item completions
Monitor incident investigation progress and work with item owners to complete in a timely fashion
Assist with chemical inventory monitoring and reporting
Support employee safety off-boarding program
Basic Qualifications:
AA and 4+ years of relevant experience; OR
BA/BS degree and 2+ years of relevant experience; OR
MA/MS degree and 0+ years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
Background in health and safety, chemistry, or environmental science.
Demonstrated ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
The ability to effectively shift priorities and work at a rapid pace is required.
