We are seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Systems Engineer to join our Operational Technology group to support the startup of Kite’s brand new, state of the art, commercial Cell Therapy facility currently under construction in Frederick, Maryland.

Internally known as a Process Engineer III, the Manufacturing Systems Engineer, under minimal supervision, will be responsible for a technical role during the design, start-up, commissioning and qualification of site’s Automation infrastructure and systems. As such, this individual will work closely with the corporate IT function while collaborating with the site’s Quality, Engineering, Facilities, and Supply Chain units. 

Additionally, the Manufacturing Systems Engineer will oversee and maintain automation-based systems and solutions which provide for flexible, innovative, cost effective, compliant and quality-focused environment. The automation systems include Site Building Automation System, including utility and HVAC controls, Site Equipment Monitoring System, Site Critical Power Management System, and Site Historian Systems (including OSIsoft PI historian) – these systems will have both PLC and embedded control-based components. Additional automation systems include Site Computerize Process Equipment, Site Computerized QC and Analytical Instrumentation, Site MES system, and Building Environment Monitoring system.

Responsibilities of the Manufacturing Systems Engineer include:

  • Sustains plant Manufacturing Systems Engineering operations

  • Creates, modifies, and maintains automation system and documentation, including automation specification documents and SOPs, in a compliant state

  • Automation Projects and CapEx: Develops, plans and implements automation based projects and solutions in collaboration with cross-functional teams, including determination and delivery on cost, time and quality to ensure the sustained production, successful product launches and customer satisfaction (these projects may be new facilities and/or retrofit of existing)

  • Provides automation system hardware support including installation as well as automation system design for data integrity, stability and interface between different systems

  • Ensures effective maintenance and availability of automation equipment

  • Implements automation changes to existing control system hardware and software, and supervises modifications done by outside vendors, including development of specifications and testing documentation

  • Supports the validation of automation systems with QA Validation and provides technical skills to projects in support of the Capital Plan

  • Provides technical expertise and automation technical knowledge for troubleshooting, investigations and training

  • Optimizes technical aspect of automation systems to ensure efficiency and compliance

Basic Requirements:

MS / MA Degree with 3+ years of cGMP manufacturing and/or process automation and/or process engineering and/or computerized systems management experience

OR

BS / BA Degree with 5+ years of the aforementioned experience

Experience

OR

High School Degree with 9+ years of the aforementioned experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent related fields and 5+ years of relevant experience

  • Implementation and program design expertise with MES, CMMS, BMS, and/or DCS

  • Possesses good communication skills to promote cross function discussions and communications

  • Experience working on cross functional teams to obtain project deliverables as well as systems investigation and root cause analysis tools

  • Experience with Computerized Process Equipment and Process Control design and implementation
