Reporting to Senior Director, Attribute Sciences, the Senior Principal Scientist, Attribute Sciences Biophysical Characterization, Analytical Operations will be responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team that develops and utilizes state-of-the-art biophysical tools to assess product quality attributes that help guide process development and product knowledge of viral vector-based gene delivery platforms and T cell therapies.

In this role, the ideal candidate will lead the strategy for development of advanced biophysical analytics capabilities in Analytical Development, primarily Mass Spectrometry and extending to other technologies including Dynamic Light Scattering and Analytical Ultracentrifugation, among others, to understand the physical and chemical properties of vector and T cells. To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate must have extensive expertise in biophysical technologies to support process development, strategic thinking, business acumen, as well as excellent leadership skills.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Guide the development strategy for the use of mass spectrometry techniques used to assess viral vector and cell therapy final product attributes

  • Develop capabilities for in-house biophysical characterization of viral vectors (e.g., Dynamic Light Scattering, Sedimentation-Velocity Analytical Ultracentrifugation, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis) to enhance viral vector product understanding.

  • Supervise and develop scientists/analysts within Attributes Sciences

  • Develop a high functioning team that is integrated in AD and cross-functionally to support business needs

  • Support team members, hold them accountable for performance, coach/mentor as well as provide performance reviews of team members

  • Enhance team capabilities to promote a diverse and complimentary analytical skill set to further process and product understanding

  • Work collaboratively with Cell and Vector Attribute Sciences teams to inform product characterization and product knowledge strategies to advance pipeline programs

  • Stay current with analytical technical platforms, cell and gene therapy industry best practices, as well as cutting edge innovations to support the development of cell therapy products

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Molecular Biology or related discipline with 8+ years of industry experience or M.S. degree (M.S.) with 10+ years of industry experience

  • Advanced knowledge of cell biology, cancer biology, and/or immunology preferred

  • Extensive hands-on experience on the use of mass spectrometry for proteomics applications

  • Experience performing biophysical analysis (e.g., Dynamic Light Scattering, Sedimentation-Velocity Analytical Ultracentrifugation, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis) in scientific or technical environments to drive business solutions

  • Proficiency in mass spectrometry and proteomics data analysis tools and methodologies, including interpretation and statistical analysis on large datasets

  • Strong scientific writing and presentation skills

  • Ability to think critically and demonstrate troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Highly collaborative with excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description

  • Comfortable in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with minimal direction

  • Demonstrated leadership ability in pharmaceutical manufacturing of biotechnology products, cell therapy products, analytical method development, and process development

  • Agile mindset and ability to adjust workload based upon changing priorities
