We are seeking a highly motivated leader to join our Supply Chain team as a Senior Sourcing and Category Manager – APIs, Biologics, and Chemicals. Internally known as a Senior Manager of Supply Chain, this Senior Manager will lead the Biologics, Chemicals, and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) raw material direct category of spend. With a focus on the development of the category strategies that define how sourcing will be done for the development, clinical, and manufacturing organizations for raw materials, this Senior Manager will maintain and support the implementation of 2-3 year category strategic plans and ensure projects deliver on risk, quality, regulatory, cost, and other value drivers working with cross-functions teams. Further, the incumbent will develop sourcing strategies / execution and supplier relationship management.   In addition, he/she will be a key part in the maturation of sourcing strategies and execution, and supplier management at Kite which includes developing/improving and implementing processes and plans.

This position can be a remotely-based position for the right candidate or located at our Frederick, Maryland or Santa Monica, CA., El Segundo, CA. or Oceanside, CA. locations.

Responsibilities of the Senior Sourcing and Category Manager – APIs, Biologics, and Chemicals include:

  • Develops and executes multi-year category strategies

  • Assesses risk of suppliers and materials and recommending risk mitigation plans

  • Lead cross-functional teams to drive results on various category, sourcing, supplier risk activities

  • Drives continued improvements of performance metrics, programs/processes, and innovations to achieve higher levels of business value

  • Ability to lead globally (i.e. implement global sourcing strategy into local markets) while managing a total expenditure of $100M+

  • Identifies, builds, and maintains mutually beneficial relationships, partnerships, and alliances with select suppliers through Supplier Relationship Development programs

  • Develops a list of preferred suppliers within a category of spend and manage compliance

  • Establishes contract negotiation strategies and executes contract negotiations

  • Recommends and implements changes to the organization’s purchasing, supply management and material usage policies as needed

  • Develops and executes Sourcing Strategies while leading Sourcing Events – i.e. RFX and the negotiation and contracting

  • Leverages various sourcing tools and analytical methods commonly practiced and used within a world-class Global Procurement organization

  • Conducts detailed spend analysis by category and develops cost saving targets

  • Conducts market and competitive conditions by category

  • Leads engagement with business partners to influence business strategy leveraging supply market insights and align sourcing strategies

  • Champions a 1-3-year pipeline of savings and value plans in alignment with category and business strategies to deliver sustainable productivity

  • Collaborates with Business Partners to deliver year over year productivity and risk management

  • Contributes to continuous improvement in sourcing processes, tools and operating model

  • Influences and develop broad global programs and initiatives for operations manufacturing

  • Acts as a sourcing expert with strong financial acumen as well as a decision maker for category/functional sourcing strategy and supplier selection

  • Drives operating efficiencies by understanding business needs and complex supply markets

  • Accesses supplier capability and innovation for the business

  • Identifies and mitigates supply risk

  • Frames and drives cross-functional sourcing agenda

  • Drives alignment between category strategy and the needs and requirements of regions, countries, and sites

Basic Requirements:

PhD degree


MA /MS degree with 6+ years of Sourcing and/or Operations and/or Supply Chain experience


BA/BS degree with 8+ years of Sourcing and/or Operations and/or Supply Chain experience


High School Degree with 12+ years of Sourcing and/or Operations and/or Supply Chain experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of procurement / category management / sourcing experience within the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industries

  • Professional certifications (i.e. CPM, CPIM) and/or membership in Professional Associations, i.e. ISM

  • In-depth knowledge of the supplier base for biologicals and chemicals

  • Intermediate knowledge level in one or more of the Direct Materials categories

  • Diverse global sourcing / procurement experience

  • Broad knowledge of the market forces shaping a customer’s business context (i.e. supplier base, legal and regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)

  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and utilizing full set of sourcing levers to drive value for customers

  • Ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations

  • Ability to provide thought leadership and actively shape strategy

  • Strong interpersonal, communications and problem-solving skills with a passion for strategic sourcing, supply management and operational procurement.
