Principal Scientist, Medicinal and Structural Chemistry
NMR Analytical Chemist
This role represents an opportunity to maintain and further develop Gilead’s NMR facility and its impact on Gilead’s Small Molecule Drug Discovery organization toward achieving our goal of discovering transformational medicines. The ideal candidate will bridge the disciplines of NMR spectroscopy and medicinal chemistry through a deep knowledge of both fields as applied to small molecule drug discovery.
Responsibilities
NMR Strategy: Further develop the strategy for NMR spectroscopy and enhance capabilities to include seamless data analysis workflows and quantitative NMR analysis.
Instrument Maintenance: Responsible for maintaining existing NMR facility to ensure optimal performance and to support Gilead’s Medicinal Chemistry research organization.
Structural Elucidation: Obtain and interpret multidimensional NMR data of small molecules and provide detailed reports and insights on chemical structures and properties.
Method Development: Develop and optimize traditional and novel NMR methods for various applications.
Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all experiments, analyses, and results in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Training and Support: Provide training and technical support to junior staff and other team members on NMR techniques and instrument operation.
Collaboration: Collaborate and communicate effectively with medicinal chemistry colleagues and cross-functional teams.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. (with 5+ years) in organic chemistry, or equivalent discipline with an emphasis in NMR techniques and methods.
OR
Master's (+8 years) in organic chemistry, or equivalent discipline with an emphasis in NMR techniques and methods.
OR
Bachelor's (+10 years) in organic chemistry, or equivalent discipline with an emphasis in NMR techniques and methods.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong knowledge and experience in NMR spectroscopy with proven applications in the pharmaceutical industry. Demonstrated ability to obtain and analyze NMR data to perform structure elucidation in a medicinal chemistry environment.
Strong data processing and analysis skills including coding language for data analysis and database management.
Comprehensive knowledge of Bruker NMR instrumentation and software, methodology and Mnova NMR software.
Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to develop and optimize analytical methods.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly and concisely.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
Strong synthetic skills and a solid knowledge of modern organic synthesis techniques
Experience with latest NMR techniques to elucidate interactions between small molecules and their drug targets.
Experience with NMR based fragment screening methods.
Experience with the use of liquid handlers for NMR sample preparation. Experience conducting multi-step organic synthesis.
Recent experience conducting parallel or automated synthesis.
Knowledge of DMPK and ADME principles.
