Job Description
At Gilead our pursuit of a healthier world for all people has yielded a cure for hepatitis C, revolutionary improvements in HIV treatment and prevention as well as advancements in therapies for viral and inflammatory diseases and certain cancers.
We set and achieve bold ambitions in our fight against the world's most devastating diseases, united in our commitment to confronting the largest public health challenges of our day and improving the lives of patients for generations to come.
This role requires regular on-site presence in Foster City, CA and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work arrangements. Applicants must currently reside in the area or be willing to relocate to Foster City prior to their start date. Local candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Oncology is a field defined by extraordinary scientific progress, rapidly evolving standards of care, intense competition and increasingly complex choices about where and how to create the greatest impact for patients. In that environment, having more data is not enough. Competitive advantage comes from asking the right questions, connecting evidence others see separately, anticipating what may happen next, and translating insight into better decisions.
The Executive Director, Oncology Integrated Insights & Analytics will have the opportunity to shape how Gilead does exactly that. As a senior leader within Global Decision Sciences & Insights, this individual will bring together market research, analytics, forecasting and broader sources of evidence to develop an integrated perspective on the Oncology business and portfolio. The opportunity is both strategic and organizational: help Oncology leaders make consequential decisions with greater clarity and confidence while building an Insights & Analytics team and capability positioned for the future.
Reporting to the Vice President of Global Decision Sciences & Insights, the Executive Director will serve as a senior thought partner and advisor across the global Oncology organization and will be a member of the Global Oncology Leadership team.
The Executive Director will help frame the business questions that matter most, connect insights across Global Decision Sciences & Insights, and translate a complex body of evidence into clear implications for strategy and action across current products and the early- and late-stage Oncology pipeline. The role will partner across Marketing, Value & Access, product strategy teams, Finance, affiliate and country analytics teams, Portfolio Analytics, Supply Chain, Medical, and Data Science.
The leader will have responsibility for a team of approximately 8 to 10 colleagues spanning Market Research, Analytics and Forecasting.
Success will be measured not simply by the quality of the analysis produced, but by the extent to which the organization turns evidence into better, faster and more forward-looking decisions.
Shape Oncology strategy through integrated insights
- Serve as a senior strategic and analytical thought partner to Oncology leaders, helping define the questions and choices with the greatest implications for the portfolio and business.
- Bring together market research, analytics, forecasting and other relevant evidence to develop a coherent, integrated perspective rather than a collection of individual analyses.
- Translate complex evidence into clear strategic implications, choices and recommendations that senior leaders can act upon.
- Shape decisions spanning disease-area strategy, pipeline and portfolio assessment, launch strategy, positioning, lifecycle opportunities, business development assessments and long-range strategic planning.
- Create connectivity across Oncology primary / secondary research and analytical efforts so that leaders can understand not only what is happening, but why it matters, what may happen next, and what the organization should do about it.
Be a trusted challenger and enterprise partner
- Build deep, productive partnerships across global Oncology teams and relevant enterprise functions, creating alignment around the highest-priority business questions and evidence needs.
- Bring intellectual curiosity and constructive challenge to senior discussions, testing assumptions and helping teams distinguish signal from noise in complex or ambiguous situations.
- Influence effectively across organizational boundaries and levels, including in situations where the role does not have formal decision authority.
- Engage Portfolio Analytics, Supply Chain, Medical and Data Science partners to frame business questions and bring complementary expertise together around major strategic choices.
- Strengthen connectivity with affiliate and country analytics teams, enabling insight and learning to move effectively across the global organization.
- Support critical enterprise processes, including the Oncology earnings narrative and long-range strategic planning.
Build an exceptional Insights & Analytics organization
- Lead, develop and inspire a high-performing multidisciplinary team across Market Research, Analytics and Forecasting.
- Create an inclusive environment in which talented people can do their best work, differing perspectives are actively sought, and healthy debate improves the quality of thinking and decisions.
- Develop talent thoughtfully, understanding people's strengths, aspirations and potential and providing the coaching, feedback and opportunities that enable them to grow.
- Empower teams with clear purpose and accountability while removing barriers and connecting their work to the broader organization.
- Attract and develop people who combine analytical excellence with curiosity, business judgment, collaboration and the courage to challenge established thinking.
- Foster a culture of learning and measurement, using the right KPIs and feedback loops to continually improve decisions and performance. The existing Oncology role explicitly establishes the expectation to build a measurement and learning culture.
Advance the future of Integrated Insights & Analytics
- Continually evolve how Market Research, Analytics and Forecasting work together, increasing the speed, quality and strategic value of insight generation.
- Partner closely with Data Science and Data Management leadership, building on the existing expectation to use cutting-edge techniques to advance Oncology market shaping and launches.
- Champion thoughtful use of AI, advanced analytics, automation and new approaches to insight synthesis where they can materially improve the speed, depth or quality of decision support.
- Create an environment in which teams experiment responsibly, learn quickly and scale approaches that demonstrate meaningful business value.
- Maintain high standards for analytical rigor while encouraging the organization to challenge legacy approaches and adopt better methods when evidence supports doing so.
Basic qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and Fourteen Years’ Experience
OR
Masters' Degree and Twelve Years’ Experience
OR
PhD and Twelve Years’ Experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated leadership across the disciplines that generate business insight, including strong understanding of commercial analytics, market research methodologies and forecasting, together with an understanding of Data Science and its application to commercial questions.
- Strong track record of leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Demonstrated ability to frame complex or ambiguous business questions and translate evidence into recommendations that shape strategy and action.
- Proven ability to lead major cross-functional initiatives and influence senior stakeholders laterally and vertically, including without direct authority.
- Strong understanding of pharmaceutical commercialization, product lifecycle management and the regulatory environment.
- Exceptional executive communication skills, including the ability to simplify complexity, facilitate productive debate, resolve conflict where necessary and build alignment among diverse stakeholders. The underlying communication, influencing, conflict-resolution and consensus-building requirements are explicit in the existing role.
- Broad experience across multiple stages of the Oncology lifecycle, from pipeline and portfolio choices through launch, growth and lifecycle strategy.
- A track record of integrating multiple analytical disciplines into a single strategic perspective rather than operating them as separate capabilities.
- Strong strategic judgment and the confidence to constructively challenge conventional wisdom while grounding recommendations in evidence.
- Experience applying advanced analytics, AI or automation to improve how insights are generated, synthesized or used in decision-making.
- Experience creating organizational capability, not simply managing established processes.
- A reputation as a talent builder who attracts strong people, develops future leaders and creates an inclusive culture characterized by curiosity, accountability and high standards.
- Enterprise orientation: an instinct to optimize for the broader business and patient opportunity rather than the interests of an individual analytical discipline.
What great leadership looks like in this role
- The strongest candidate will combine analytical depth with business judgment, strategic curiosity with pragmatic action, and confidence with openness to challenge.
- They will be comfortable moving between an Oncology leadership conversation about portfolio strategy and a discussion with an analytical team about the evidence required to resolve the question. They will know when deeper analysis is required and when the organization has enough evidence to make a decision.
- Most importantly, they will see Insights & Analytics not as an end in itself, but as a means of creating decision advantage: improving the organization's ability to make high-quality choices, learn quickly and translate evidence into better business and patient outcomes.
