Kite Pharma, a Gilead Company, is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel cancer immunotherapy products. Our company is focused on chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) cell therapies designed to empower the immune system's ability to recognize tumors.
We are seeking a Research Scientist to join the protein biochemistry core team. You are an enthusiastic protein engineer/biochemist who will lead from the bench and collaborate with project teams and core groups, in parallel, to support multiple cell therapy programs. Specifically, you will be part of a small team of scientists focused on the design, production and characterization of recombinant proteins to support project teams and the organization.
Responsibilities
- Structure-based design of recombinant proteins, including immunogens, target proteins, antibodies, etc…
- Protein expression and purification
- Antibody/protein conjugations
- Biophysical and biochemical protein characterization
- Develop and implement new technologies to accelerate and improve protein production and characterization processes
- Detailed documentation and record keeping
- Train and mentor junior staff
- Communicate plans and results in both oral and written form, cross-functionally
- Coordination of tasks across multiple projects, demonstrating prioritization and planning
Basic Qualifications
- Advanced scientific degree (i.e. MD, PharmD, PhD) OR
- Master’s Degree and 6+ years of scientific experience OR
- Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of scientific experience
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD degree in Biochemistry or related discipline.
- Industry experience and/or post-doctoral experience, with a meaningful publication record
- Experience with protein/antibody engineering and structure analysis software (MOE, Pymol or other)
- Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of recombinant protein expression systems and protein purification methods using AKTA chromatography systems. Experience in membrane protein purification is a plus.
- Demonstrated expertise in biophysical and biochemical protein characterization methods, such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot, UPLC/HPLC for analytical SEC or SEC-MALS, DLS or others
- Experience using Octet (BLI) or other technologies to determine biomolecular binding affinity and kinetics or study ligand-analyte complexes
- Demonstrated problem solving and trouble shooting skills
- Excellent time management skills and comfortable in a exciting environment, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and timelines
- Self-motivated and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description
- Strong organizational skills and online record keeping
- Ability to work onsite in the lab
- Demonstrated ability to mentor others
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
