Reporting to the A/Director of HIV, Medical Affairs. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found and is open to candidates based in Melbourne or Sydney.

Essential Job Functions

  • The Senior Manager, Medical Affairs will have the opportunity to meet the scientific needs of organisations that support people living with HIV and people at risk of acquiring HIV; patient advocates and AIDS councils representatives by delivering various educational programs, disease state awareness and support community-based research and fostering collaborative relationships across the broader HIV community to facilitate the exchange of unbiased scientific information.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Focus on Improving care of people living with HIV through non-promotional activities such as: education on HIV disease awareness and developing appropriate programs supporting HIV screening, diagnosis, linkage to care and management of comorbidities
  • Improve prevention efforts for people at risk of acquiring HIV through non-promotional activities on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention
  • Effectively and appropriately communicate the clinical data on the treatment and prevention of HIV, based on requests from allied healthcare professionals including treatments officers
  • Provide medical leadership to plan and execute Medical Affairs Advisory Programs with HIV Community representatives
  • Contribute to the development, execution, and coordination of the Medical Affairs plan of action and territory-specific strategic initiatives, with a focus on initiatives with organisations that support people living with HIV
  • Establish strong working links with all relevant Gilead departments and therapeutic area cross functional partners including Public Affairs, Commercial and Government Affairs
  • Communicate Gilead’s commitment to scientific excellence in HIV through research and balanced education
  • Support the training needs of patient advocates by providing educational resources designed to increase patient understanding of HIV disease state and optimal approaches to disease management
  • Is responsible for adverse event reporting and management of drug safety and pharmacovigilance activities in compliance with local and global regulatory requirements and policies
  • Communicate and demonstrate a compelling and consistent vision of Gilead’s commitment to patients
  • Utilizes scientific resources to create impactful and appropriate presentations in a variety of different settings
  • Continually monitor the disease state environment to sustain expertise in disease state management and new therapies, competitive products, and features
  • Support identification of data gaps. Communicate with opinion leaders to develop phase 4 studies aligned with global medical strategies
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with commercial, regulatory, HEOR team, therapeutic area medical lead and with external contacts as well as participate in special projects based on extensive knowledge base, experience, and competency
  • Travels to appointments, meetings, and conferences on a regular basis, occasionally with short notice.
  • Capability of spending time in field focussed on external stakeholders
  • Working with the local lead on early development of a variety of projects, he/ she provides independent thought and initiative in the further development of specific projects and ensuing presentations and reports
  • Attends major conferences and helps coordinate medical affairs activities at conferences and may present to external audience
  • Must be fully cognizant of all relevant scientific data
  • Must be cognizant of regulatory requirements and industry code of conduct
  • Must be committed to continuing education to maintain knowledge base

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

  • Degree in biomedical sciences preferred.
  • Existing expertise in HIV, Infectious Diseases, Virology, Immunology is preferred
  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry or related healthcare field is, collaborating with and supporting the business is preferred
  • Ability of transferring complex scientific/medical data into understandable medical communication and education
  • Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills are required along with the ability to provide clear and concise analysis of quantitative and qualitative concepts
  • Ability and wish to continuously learn and improve and to work as a member of several local and international cross functional teams. Able to work with a high level of autonomy and independence
  • Proven ability to support cross functional teams
  • Excellent analytical skills, demonstrated by the ability to identify and understand complex issues and problems, and interpret data and translate these in a manner that provides appropriate recommendations to respective cross functional groups
  • Ability to utilize complex scientific resources for presentations in a variety of different settings
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Fluency in English
  • Proven ability to work in a cross-functional matrix
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally which will include occasional weekend travel.
  • Must be able to work with a high degree of personal initiative
  • Is seen as expert and sought out for advice and collaboration by others both from within and outside Gilead
  • Ability to build and develop networks and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including patient advocacy groups, medical thought-leaders, academic and non-academic institutions, governmental agencies, large group practices, clinical services directors
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, including the management of multiple priorities and resources
  • Strong business skills/acumen; translation of scientific expertise and knowledge to achieve the identified business goals of the company
