The Inflammation Clinical Development function is responsible for defining and executing integrated clinical development strategies that translate emerging immunology science into differentiated medicines for patients with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

The Position

Gilead is advancing a differentiated Inflammation/Immunology portfolio across allergic diseases, rheumatologic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology-related inflammatory conditions, and other autoimmune diseases. The portfolio includes internal programs, partnered assets, and collaboration-based development efforts spanning multiple stages of clinical development, from pre-IND through Phase 3.

The Vice President, Clinical Development – Inflammation is the senior clinical development leader responsible for defining strategy, setting priorities, driving execution, and providing integrated portfolio leadership across Th2-mediated allergic diseases, rheumatology, and B-cell–mediated autoimmune disease.

This leader will oversee a portfolio spanning multiple assets, indications, development stages, and external collaborations, partnering with internal functions and alliance partners to ensure clinical strategies are scientifically rigorous, operationally feasible, regulatory-aligned, and integrated with broader portfolio objectives.

The VP will lead clinical development leaders and matrixed cross-functional teams, set portfolio priorities, manage development risks, support governance decisions, and ensure high-quality execution across programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee Development Leads and multidisciplinary matrix teams responsible for advancing programs across Th2-mediated allergic diseases, rheumatologic diseases, and B-cell–mediated autoimmune diseases.

  • Set portfolio priorities across assets, disease areas, mechanisms of action, and indications.

  • Manage a team responsible for clinical development strategy and execution from pre-IND through late stage development, ensuring scientific rigor, operational excellence, and regulatory alignment.

  • Lead development strategy for key partnered assets, including programs from business development and acquisition activities.

  • Serve as the senior Development representative for strategic alliances, governance committees, joint steering committees, and cross-company decision forums.

  • Build productive relationships with external collaborators, academic experts, investigators, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with Research, Commercial, Corporate Development, Regulatory Affairs, Manufacturing, Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations, Biometrics, and other functions to align portfolio objectives and execution.

  • Partner with Kite and other strategic internal stakeholders, where applicable, to align development and portfolio strategies.

  • Represent Gilead externally in scientific, regulatory, and business forums related to the Inflammation portfolio.

  • Serve as a company-wide expert and thought leader in inflammation and autoimmune disease clinical development strategy.

  • Ensure development programs are executed in accordance with high scientific, quality, compliance, and ethical standards.

  • Attract, develop, mentor, and retain high-performing clinical talent.

Education & Qualifications

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. required; 10+ years of relevant industry experience preferred.

  • Significant pharmaceutical or biotechnology clinical development experience, including global program leadership and cross-functional governance experience.

  • Deep expertise in inflammation, immunology, rheumatology, autoimmune diseases, allergy/immunology, or related therapeutic areas.

  • Demonstrated success developing and executing clinical development strategies from early development through registration and lifecycle management.

  • Experience leading complex portfolios spanning multiple assets, indications, and development stages.

  • Proven capability managing strategic alliances, partnerships, and external collaborations.

  • Strong understanding of global regulatory requirements and experience interacting with major health authorities.

  • Track record of influencing executive-level decision-making and leading effectively through highly matrixed organizations.

  • Exceptional strategic thinking, business acumen, and portfolio management capabilities.

  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to operate in a dynamic environment and drive alignment across diverse internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and develop high-performing teams.
